Can I become a insurance adjuster if I have a felony?

All licenses in the insurance industry are issued under the authority of the state, however, the federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (18 USC 1033, 1034) specifies that persons who have committed certain felonies are prohibited from being involved without a consent waiver from the state regulator. If your felony specifically involved a money or property crime, among others, you will need the waiver. There is no statute of limitations on when the crime/conviction occurred.

His conviction is within the scope of 18 USC 1033, 1034, which could prevent his licensing. It's up to your state's insurance regulator to decide. No one here can answer that question for you or your husband.

Probably will, but only the Insurance Commissioner can tell you for sure. Try calling the Dept of Insurance and speaking to a license application examiner about your situation.

I have a felony conviction for aggravated assault from 3 yrs back. I got 30 days probation and it was over. The only mark on my record. Would this prevent me from getting a 4-40 licence in the State of Florida?

Possibly. But only the insurance commissioner can tell you the answer to your question.

The post above that of J H applies to all states and all manner of insurance licenses. No one can answer these questions about felony and misdemeanor convictions with any certainty except the state regulator.

I just took the 40 hour pre-licensing course in Atlanta GA. The instructor informed me that I could not obtain a license for claims adjuster or agent because I had a felony. Befor I took the course I called the Insurance Commissioner (I think), and he said it was no problem. I was charged with posession of a controlled substance 4 years ago but only got probation no prison time. Will I be able to obtain the necessary licenses some how to continue my career in the insurance field, or am I just going to not get a chance from society to put my life back together and become a productive member in society and take care of my son?

Well, who do you think has the right answer, someone called the Insurance Commissioner or someone who teaches insurance classes?

Your crime is not one that is enumerated in the federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, but it could be an issue under state law.

I was charged with . . . but only got probation

You were convicted, and that's what matters. If the Commissioner has said it's not going to be a problem, I would rely on that -- because he's the one who makes that decision, not your prelicensing instructor.

When you apply for your license, just be sure to disclose the conviction (you probably pled "nolo contendere" [no contest]), or you really will have trouble.
