You are legally responsible for damages you cause in an accident. The fact that you do not have insurance has no bearing on your financial responsibility. Assuming the $4k+ you are referring to is the damage amount you caused in the accident- you owe this money and there really isn't much at all you can do.

You are responsible for this. If you don't pay, the other insurance company has the right to garnishee your wages and levy/attach any bank or other accounts that you have. This can't be done until they obtain a judgment against you in court. You will be notified if they are taking you to court in an effort to force you to pay.

As well, you are going to be facing some pretty severe penalties for driving without insurance + getting into an accident, depending on the state.

Confirm that the amount is correct and then other pay it or see if they will either take a reduced lump sum or put you on a payment plan.

You are financially responsible for your actions and when you don't have insurance to address your liability it does not mean you can simply walk away from it.

Also, next time someone tells you that insurance is expensive, you can tell them why and also ask them if they would rather pay $4500 if they are in an accident.

PS and that is cheap! Imagine if someone was seriously hurt and the bill was $50,000!

I'm guessing you'd also gone out and obtained insurance.

@ sapa: Yes, you'll be notified if they're trying to take you to court. If you get such notice, make sure you be there in time, lest the judgment should go against you.

I was also thinking about it. It's too risky to drive without insurance.

Just reading the OP's post, I'm assuming the accident was his/her fault. Just curious, though. If the accident was the OTHER person's fault, would the OP's workplace's Insurance cover damages, etc?

I think you are reading the word "company" and thinking this the OP's employer. The "company" in this case is an "insurance company". If the OP was not at fault, I don't see why anyone would be attempting to collect from him/her.

The highly probable situation is that the OP was driving his/her own vehicle without insurance and hit someone else.
