An additional insured has certain rights under the policy. A certificate holder is just given information about the policy, they are not always an additional insured.

Certificate Holder – a person or entity that requests a proof of insurance from the named insured.

Additional Insured – a person or organization for which the named insured is performing operations under a contract, and for whom the named insured is contractually obligated to furnish additional insured coverage.

Being a certificate holder entitles that entity to receive notices of any changes in the policy. A certificate of insurance itself bestows no rights upon the holder. It is merely for informational purposes. The certificate of insurance usually lists the type of insurance, amount of insurance, the insuring company and contact information. Certificate of insurance simply shows a proof that “Named Insured” actually has insurance.

As an “additional insured” you are actually given coverage and have rights in the event of a future claim.
