I live in north carolina and my car has just been deemed a total loss. the insurance company sent me paperwork they say i must sign and return before they can make me an offer and send me a check. My quetion is am i obligated to sign their paperwork and send it back before an agreement has been made? seems like once i sign the paperwork they can pretty much do what they want and I have signed over my right? am i correct my insurer is nationwide if it makes a diff...btw this was mechanical fire damage not an accident the car was new to me so no ther issues

"Paperwork" is pretty general. What is this "paperwork"? If its a release then the adjuster should be fired.

But I'm guessing it's a Power of Attorney which would be correct as it gives them the ability to take possession of the vehicle and not leave it in your name.

You should always read any document carefully before you sign it.
If you feel uncomfortable about any statement mentioned in the document you need to sign, feel free to inquire about it.
Clarify your doubts before signing the necessary paperwork needed by your insurer.
