I’ll be buying my first car this February and I was looking for insurance quotes online. I found out that if I include my father on the policy, it’ll bring down the cost by at least a neat $1200. The problem is that my father’s driving license has probably expired while he was touring Iraq and he didn’t get it renewed. He doesn’t like driving much either. Is it possible to have my father listed on my policy? Could I land in trouble if they find out my father isn’t driving? I’m going to be the registered owner of the car and the primary driver.

Auto insurance policies are rated for licensed drivers in your household. But for your dad to be a driver, he needs to have an active license.

If you list him as a driver, the insurance company will check his motor vehicle record, and see his license is not active. This can cause problems determining your eligibility, and offering you insurance.

When you straighten it out, your dad will be removed as a driver, and your rate will go up, even if you already started & paid for your car insurance policy at the lower rate.

If your dad is licensed and lives with you, no problem, even if he never chooses to drive.

You can list your father as the secondary driver. It won’t be a problem assuming that you both live under the same roof. The insurance company wouldn’t mind if your father was listed in the policy and not driving. It is recommended that your father renews his driving license so that he can drive and be covered under the policy. Driving with an expired license forms major grounds for coverage denial.
