|
|
My friend was flying in from California and rented a Civic at the airport. While driving down to my office, he blew out his front right tire. The entire right end of the front bumper and the right skirt is entirely rubbed out. He left the car at my office parking garage and flew out to Kansas in the morning. Is his insurance company going to take care of the damage? Would the car be insured by the rental service itself? My friend will be flying back here on Friday. _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

No one told the rental company of this issue when it happened?
The rental contract with the rental company will make your friend responsible for the damage. I don't know if his insurance will address it as I don't even know if he has insurance. If he does, he would need to have comprehensive coverage for this loss. If he does, then his insurance will most likely address the damage but it will be paid less his deductible. He will need to make up that difference. Also, the rental company will try to tack on charges like an admin fee. His carrier should deny this charge as it's not owed. They will also tack on Loss of Use. Personally, I think this is owed. Your friends carrier might pay this but really most policies don't provide coverage for this in this situation.
The rental company needs to know about the accident as soon as it happens. They pick up the car and swap it out with another one. |

I have already asked my friend to inform the rental service and they will be taking the car tomorrow morning. He does have insurance. He is covered by Progressive as far as I know. Thank you for the advice. _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

Many credit cards also supply secondary coverage for rental cars (American Express does, for example). If your friend rented with one of these cards, it would probably cover his deductible, and possibly other fees that the car rental company charges him with. _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

Why would he not return the vehicle to the rental company? Do they now consider the vehicle stolen or did he rent it for an extended period of time?
