I live in New York and I had leased a car about a year and half ago. The car is in my name and is registered here in NY. My son took it to North Carolina where he was attending college. He graduated in October last year and he is still in N. Carolina with the car. My insurance company called me last night and told me that they would no longer carry insurance for the car, effective next month. So basically my son has to get the car insured in NC and he can’t because it’s registered here in NY and has a lease on it. I can’t register the car in NC because I live here. Is there a solution to this problem?

Your car insurance company needs to notify you in writing about dropping the leased car from your insurance coverage.

The NY registration is most likely not the issue. You need to see if you can get NC auto insurance in your name, with your son as the driver. This may be a problem, because you don't have possession of the car, and your son is no longer in school.

I assume your current insurance company had no solutions for you? You may want to call Geico & Progressive, and explain the situation to them, since you are in New York, and they sell insurance nationally.

If you can get your son's name on the NY registration, he could insure it in NC, if he is staying in NC.

Yes, Robert does have a point. The best course of action would be to register your son in NY and then have him insure the car in NC. He already has domicile in that state so it shouldn't be a problem.
