Premium went up suddenly. New carrier, no claims

I had to drop my auto insurance before I moved out of NY and got a new carrier here is Louisiana. I sat down with an agent, discussed my options and he gave me an excellent quote which I took up on without much thought. I had set the deductible on my policy for $600. I pay my premium on a quarterly basis and a few days ago I got the bill from my insurance company. The premium was at least thrice the amount the agent said it would be. I tried contacting the agent but he says he is on vacation for a fortnight. In the meantime, my policy is about to lapse. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do. Help?

There is no one in your agent's office for the next 2 weeks to help you?

Call the insurance company directly, or contact another agent representing the same company for help.

Don't let your insurance lapse. In fact, if there was a lapse between your NY policy and your LA policy, that might explain the price increase.

Find out why your rates went up, and shop for better rates, or at the very least, a better agent, if the agent quoted you incorrectly.

Why did you do this? On who's advice did you do this. You should never cancel one insurance policy before new insurance is in effect. There was no reason to drop your NY coverage until your LA coverage was in place.

It is possible that the lapse is the reason for the difference, although the amount of increase seems to be excessive. As Robert suggests above, forget dealing with the agent -- he's just an "order taker" and premium collector (the first time only). Contact the insurance company immediately and determine the cause of the increase -- for all you know, it is a mistake on the insurance company's part.

In the meantime, you can begin looking for replacement insurance at a lower cost.
