steddad passed away insurance policy was to pay for funeral and what was left was to go to his 2 grown children .his spouse is 81 years old and is in assited living and also out of money for her care can we change this in any way

The insurers only allow change in the name of the beneficiary or beneficiaries, when the insured is living. In your case, since your step dad has passed away, no further changes can be done in the policy. Thus, only the beneficiaries i.e. his two children will receive payments from the policy. No claim can be made for his spouse in spite of her poor health conditions.

No one can change this. If the "two children" are not interested in supporting Mom, that's their business, and no one can force them to do what they don't want to do.

Isn't it wonderful the way families always get along when money is involved?
