My friend has loaned me his car. He has got it insured in his name. But since I'll be driving it for a few months from now on, what kind of insurance coverage will I need?

You will get your friend's insurance... and he is assuming your liability.Is your friend going to maintain an insurance policy on the vehicle?
If you personally want excess insurance, you can look for a non-owners policy.
