I thought my policy was updated to full coverage after speaking with a rep earlier in the year.

I hit the curb badly last week and paid for a new wheel and tire out of pocket. I didn't file anything with the insurance company because at the time it was just the tire and wheel. Turns out the swing arm and another part was also damaged. the car is still drive able and I couldn't afford to pay for the new parts.

Seven days later I hit the rear bumper of another car. My paint rubbed off of her bumper and there are no scratches or dents. I also noted that her car was older, dinged on the doors and not in pristine condition prior to that accident.

I didn't notice the damage done to the passenger side hood and door of my car until I returned home. I got 2 estimates to repair out of pocket and it's going to cost $1,200 to $1,700. The damage from hitting the curb compounded with the bumper to bumper is making it more costly to repair. Again the car is still drivable.

My car is a 2003 Honda. It is reliable and sturdy and I don't want to get another car. I have been accident free for 3 years till now. If I add the collision coverage now that I thought I already had, will my company pay for my car?

Nope.

That is not how insurance works. You can't pick a time when you are guaranteed that your cost will be less then the insurance companies and only then add the coverage.

1) If it worked like that, why would anyone even get insurance until after they needed it, and

2) if it worked like that how would any insurance company ever make a single dime.

Thanks for you response. I realize that insurance can't work that way; however, I was reassured by an agent back in Feb 2012 that I had full coverage. So now I find out that I was mislead. I am willing to pay for collision since that is what I was told I had.

I guess what I need to know is if it's possible for the company to assist in any way considering the miscommunication/understanding by their reps.

You should contact your agent to see if a mistake was made.

There is no such coverage as "full coverage". This seems to be where confusion starts. What "full coverage" means to you can mean something different to someone else.

Another issue is that you'd been shown what your coverage was, as it's been that way for 3 months now, and you never told anyone it was wrong.... until after an accident when you need it to be wrong.
