buy a new policy or update old one

My dad bought a new car. I got the old one to drive. The insurance is in his name with me as a registered driver. What needs to be done?

  • Will he need a new policy or can include this car under the existing policy only?
I have heard about a grace period, how long will that be? I mean, within how many days the new car needs to be insured? The car was bought around 5 days ago.
Since I'll be driving the old one, should I get the name changed for the present policy?

Oh and we reside in the state of Texas. Thanks.
Any advice is welcome. [/list]

If you live in the same household, the old car may remain on the same policy and the new car needs to be added. If you are not on the current policy as a listed driver, you need to be added as one.

If you live in a separate place, other than as a student, you need your own insurance, you can't be included on your parents' policy.

As for the grace period, it depends on the coverage in the policy. Could be as little as three days or up to 20 days or more. But it's always best to contact the insurance company ASAP. That should have been around Monday this week.

Most states require the vehicle to be insured before driving off. If you having a hard time choosing, i suggest shopping online for quotes or ask an agent. It all depends. The best thing is to shop online and compare rates. Go Here [Link removed per TOU]. Our system will automatically show the cheapest auto insurance companies in your area. Compare and choose. Good Luck!
