I will be visiting Michigan for work and will stay over at my friend's place for a week or so. I'll have to use his car during that time. Will his insurance cover me? Or should I get a rental?

Normally it will cover you as a permissive user that does not have regular access to the vehicle. Keep in mind that MI is a true no-fault state. Everyone is responsible for their own losses... even for property damage.
