My X is the custodial parent of our 16 year son who will be getting his driver's license soon. We split visitation time and I pay child support. I have heard that it is not necessary for both parents to 'add' him to the current policy. One parent has to add him, while the other parent lets their insurance carrier know that our son is covered by the other parent's policy. I'm assuming they will need to call the other parents carrier, or get a printed document of some sort, but my 'real' question is.......who add's him???

You have heard right. Both the insurers need to be informed.
In all probability, the custodial parent (in this case your X) needs to add the minor driver to the auto insurance policy.
The insurers usually suggest that the one with whom he lives for most of the time and whose vehicle he drives have to include him to his/her insurance.
If the same company insures both you, he'll be covered anyway.
