Driver's license expired, the policy didn't. Will the insurer still pay for the PIP and bodily injury?

Unless coverage depends on being a validly licensed driver, the answer is yes.

Insurance coverage is far more concerned with suspension or revocation of one's driving privilege rather than a mere expiration of one's license. Driving with a suspended or revoked licensed is a crime, driving with an expired license is an administrative violation, even though it may be punished by a fine from a court. No one goes to jail for driving with an expired license.

Many folks inadvertently fail to renew their driver license because they simply forget when it expires. My wife discovered her license had been expired for nearly one year when she was refused permission to drive onto a military base for a training class she was attending. The MP at the gate asked for her license and showed her that it was expired. She had to park her car off base and walk a mile to the class. So now I have to remind her that her license expires about 6 months after mine does. :P
