Why does insurance not cover damages if the owner crashes into his own property?

Your auto policy won't coverage the damage caused to your own property as the only coverage that would apply is liability coverage. The trigger for this coverage is when you are legally liable for the damage. You can't be legally liable to yourself.
Your auto damage would be addressed by your auto insurance and your home damage would need to be addressed by your home owners or fire policy.

While your auto insurance will not pay for damage you do to your own garage door, your homeowners insurance will -- minus your deductible (just like breaking a window or causing a fire).
