My claim has been approved and I will soon receive the check for the actual cash damages. But I'd like to wait a year or so to actually have the repairs done so that I can wait to pay the deductible. Is this possible?

If the check is made out only to you, yes.. .there should be no issue as you simply cash the check now and the deal is done. When it even if you ever have the vehicle repaired is all up to you. If you have a lien holder then that is a different issue.
