Can I borrow a car from someone if I don't have insurance coverage under his or her policy as a 19 year old? I stay with my mom and I’m listed as an occasional driver on her car insurance policy. I’m 19 and hold a full G license. On every weekend I visit my dad’s place. During these hours, I use the car for him and me and we do some occasional shopping. My dad and his girlfriend have insurance coverage but I’m not listed on their policy as I seldom drive their car and it’s not worth the extra expense. So, frankly, I’m just borrowing their car. Since I don’t have my personal insurance coverage, is it illegal to drive my dad’s car? This is causing a bit dispute among divorced parents while am in the middle.

Sorry to hear that you are stuck in the middle of this, but if you are named as an insured driver under your mother's policy, then you have secondary coverage through that policy when you drive your father's car with his permission. His insurance will be primary as long as you are a licensed driver and have permission to use his car, even if you are not named on the policy.

You asked a somewhat similar question which I just answered. Check it out here: http://www.ampminsure.org/start/about20127.html#116120

And yes, what Max has said is also true...
