Is my child who is covered under my policy still covered by my policy while driving someone else's car?

Liability coverage on a personal auto insurance policy follows the driver (not the car) . No matter whose car your child is driving, he will be covered in your insurance.

I totally agree with Shelby. No matter whose car your child is driving, he's still be covered in with your insurance.

Do not listen to these two they are completely incorrect. Insurance follows the car not the driver if your child drives someone elses car their insurance is primary your policy is a secondary policy as excess ( if at fault for an accident) it could be primary for comp or collision coverage but only in cases if the car they are driving doesn't carry the coverage to begin with ( with the exceptions of PIP Med pay etc,,) however you would want to read your policy certain carriers do not allow the coverage to transfer to a NON-Owned auto ( again except PIP and med pay per state guidelines

Do not listen to these 2 they are incorrect the insurance carrier insures the car not the driver. Your policy is a secondary to the primary policy as excess ( except pip and med pay by state law) also you may want to check your own policy as some carriers do not allow coverage to transfer to a NON - Owned auto your policy usually will only cover the car they are driving if the owners policy does not carry comp or collision coverage and the your child is at fault for the accident your property damage coverage will be a secondary again this depends on your polocy as some carriers do not cover the actions of the driver in a non-owned auto

The answer to whether insurance follows the car or driver depends on many variables, most notably the kind of insurance coverage being referred to. There are coverages that follow the car and coverages that will follow your child. In general, auto insurance follows the car. That said, I would look at your specific policy and go from there.

If the insurance followed the driver, specifically, there would be no reason to list the vehicles on the policy. This is what is called "Named, Non-Owner" auto insurance. It follows the driver.

Your personal auto policy, in almost all circumstances, provides secondary coverage when you operate someone else's vehicle.
