I'm in California. My Infirnity Insurance has paid the $18000 in repairs. My vehicle is ready to be picked up. I cannot afford the $1000 deductible until the end of the month. The auto shop says they don't take checks and they wont bill me either. Can I ask to tak t to a different shop to iunspect the rtepairs? Will that release the car to me? Can the shop hold the car if it has already been paid for the bill?

Your car has been repaired and you want to talk to a different shop about the repairs? Why? This makes no sense.

When you hire someone to perform a service for a charge do you usually need to pay them once they perform that service? It always works that way. So yes, the shop won't release you car until they are paid in full. If you ran a business would you just do work, not require payment and then just waited to see who would pay?

You took your car in and agreed to pay for the repairs once it was done. You don't have the money to pay so they won't release you car. It's 100% legal. They can place a mechanics lien on the vehicle... even going so far as to obtain ownership and sell the vehicle for their money. It won't come to that if you were to pay in a few weeks. They could also try to charge you storage fees over the next 2 weeks. As such, I'd recommend that you speak to them about this situation and work something out with them in order to minimize your expenses.

Your last comment states that the shop has been paid. No they have not.. at last not in full. They are.... $1000 short on the payment. If you sell something for $200 and the person only gives you $100 do you simply allow them to take the item and hope you see them again with that $100?

I don’t think they will release your car as they have already performed the repairs.
