Congratulations!
I wish you all the happiness of motherhood. And yeah, you should consider having health insurance. Most of the insurance companies do consider pregnancy as a preexisting condition. Therefore, you may have problems obtaining health insurance. You can check out Medicaid. It accepts women who are already pregnant. Take care

Wow! That's great. There are companies who do not consider pregnancy as preexisting condition. There you may not have any problem in getting yourself insured. Ask some of the leading insurance companies in your state. You will get a better view.

Pregnancy insurance covers both pre natal and post natal expenses. If you do not qualify for the state sponsored Medicare, there is FAMIS to cover you up.

Congratulations! I suggest you to definitely opt for a health insurance. Many companies offer insurance for the pregnant women. You can also consult an insurance advisor.

Hi Misty,

Congratulations on the news! :P

While many of these posts contain info on your situation, they didn't address some of the main points. For instance:

  • While pregnancy may not be considered a pre-existing condition and eligible for coverage immediately, I don't know of any insurance companies that will actually ISSUE you a policy if you are pregnant. That's asking the insurer to fork out thousands of dollars (in a normal, healthy pregnancy) or perhaps hundreds of thousands if there are problems with the pregnancy in exchange for a few months of premium

The state programs are not Medicare (that's federal), but Medicaid. They have nothing to do with pre-existing conditions...Medicaid programs are for low-income individuals. Most states allow pregnant women (normally under age 19) to qualify at much higher income levels compared to those who are not pregnant.

All states, including Colorado, have medical programs for those who cannot obtain insurance through normal channels. In Colorado, it's the CoverColorado program, and you may find it over here:
covercolorado.org/Pages/default.aspx

Also, here's a link to get info on Medicaid:

cms.hhs.gov/default.asp

Maybe this will help! Good luck with the kid!

Sincerely, 8)

Congrats, Misty!

Definitely find SOME sort of coverage, regardless of whether it is insurance or state-funded...but get something in place right away.

Pregnancy is a wondeful time of your life - but it is not without risk. You don't want to go into this without coverage. Even a normal, low-risk pregnancy can cost you thousands without medical coverage.

Your pregnancy is most likely completely healthy and normal - but not all are that way.
My own high-risk pregnancy and the subsequent surgeries afterwards wound up maxing out my own medical coverage through my job, and I had to go on Medicaid through the state to obtain coverage. I had to swallow my pride (I had a good job and never considered that I might have to apply for aid through the state), sit down with a social worker and let them go over my finances with a fine-tooth comb in order to get the coverage. But it was worth it. My total bills (and those for the baby) were well over $500,000. But keep in mind, this was for a very complicated pregnancy, and 3 surgeries afterwards.

My son and I are completely healthy now - but that was a rough patch! :-)
