I was reading a Safest Cars for 2008 models list

Do these lists affect your insurance in any way and/or would it depend who did the research? This one for instance was compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

What I mean is would the insurer take into account the reputation of the vehicle type for safety when calculating the premiums or is it just one of those things where it's helpful to the consumer.

They don't now and policies are rated based on risk/exposure. I don't see why this would change. As you mentioned, incentives are already given for these types of vehicles. About the only time I see it being done is when the carrier thinks the PR will be of benefit.

tscope I apologize, I know you were answering my other thread on lower rates for " green" cars there. I submitted it twice in error and was editing this one to make a new topic but you answered it in between times. Sorry! Hopefully one of the mods will move your response to the other one. I'll pm them and make a grovelling apology.

ETA I've pm'd evan and asked him to move your post. Apologies again and thanks for the response!

That was me trying not to bother the mods too and ask them to delete it, geesh...

I know a few years ago I was looking at trackers, because of the accident rate my insurance company said that my rate would be a little higher on it and went into explain about the short wheel base and the rolling them over factor, yada, yada. I did not purchase one because it just was not practical for me but at the time the price was right on it. I see alot of them on the road so they have to be insured, I know they said it would hike my rate a little, may be lori or someone with more experience will come along here and shed some more light on the subject for us. Are you thinking of buying new?
there is so much information out there now that is so easy to access, side bags everywhere, back up cameras, vehicles practically drive themselves these days, hee hee. I don't look at all the features cause it will just cost me more and I can't afford all the extras. goodluck if you are purchasing a new one, I always hate shopping for a car.

ditto, hate to car shop, bought a new car last year, what a headache, but I do have to say that all the internet resources like insurance institute and comparison shopping made my life alot easier, still had alot of questions that I had to take to the dealer and hope to get honest answers, LOL. I am pretty happy with my choice though, so far so good, gas milage is awesome, so I am saving money at the pumps, one of the perks of going to the smaller engine.

I won't be doing any shopping for a long, long time, especially for a major purchase like a car, but if I was, I would definately use all the resources available online to check out what is out there.
