I have some great suggestions.

Health
Aetna
Golden Rule
BCBS (there are 5 of them in PA to choose from based upon county)
Assurant
AMS

Those are a good place to start.

The list of carriers for life would take to long to list and depends upon the type of life insurance you wish to buy. The PA Department of Insurance can provide you with a list of carriers to choose from.

If you're looking for some dental coverage for extensive work you're going to be disappointed. If you're looking for insurance to pay for some work, you're might be slightly happy with owning a plan with low yearly caps on procedures and waiting periods in the range of 6-18 months.

I normally recommend that my clients negotiate with their dentists instead of wasting money on services they will not use. This is best done through a HSA. If they insist, I tell them to search google and use a spreadsheet I designed as a guideline to ensure that they do not buy a fake plan. Here's something you might want to look into http://www.nahu.org/legislative/discountplans.cfm

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome, Carol. I 'know' a few people, from being on other forums. I'm looking at changing my employment, and don't have Insurnace right now. Just looking for the 'right' insurance for my son and I. Well......I sure will be on here ALOT more, then before. Thanks everyone.

Most companies have a 60-90 day probationary period before benefits kick in, so it's a smart move that you are looking for options NOW. It sounds like you want to do the right thing by protecting your family by purchasing a health insurance, but don't know where to go.

Based on the information you have provided thus far I surmise that the reason you do not currently have an insurance plan in place is because of the following.

1) Your employer does not offer health benefits.
2) You cannot afford their health insurance plan options.
3) You cannot afford a family plan outside of what your work offers.
4) You or your son cannot qualify for a family plan. This is a non issue with most group plans.

Here are your options.

1) Submit your information online in order to obtain a quote from independent and captive agents. Expect 3-8 agents to call you repeatedly for 1-3 months. Some will be local, whereas other will call you from California.

2) Visit the website of one of the most popular health insurance agencies out of California that sells approximately 30% of the available plans on the market via their call center. Their name begins with E!

3) Pick up 2 books
a) Get a Good Deal on Your Health Insurance Without Getting Ripped-Off by Jonathan J. Pletzke
b) The New Health Insurance Solution: How to Get Cheaper, Better Coverage Without a Traditional Employer Plan by Paul Zane Pilzer (Author)
c) Research all the companies in PA to learn more about your options and compare all the plans.
d) 1-3 months later you will have acquired the basic knowledge to pick a plan out of all of your options entailing: group plans, family plans, short term plans, discount cards, mini-med plans, etc., as well as PA's guaranteed issue plans.

4) If you are comfortable telling us a bit more information about your family we can help narrow things down a bit. The basic information that is needed entails.

1) Your DOB and Height/Weight

2) Son's DOB Height/Weight

3) Whether or not you smoke. I hope your son doesn't smoke!

4) Current name of medications, dosage, frequency and length of time on medications for both of you.

5) Previous medications within the last 5 years.

6) ER visits in the past X visits

7) Current medial conditions, as well as treatment that has/will occur.

8) Name and location of current doctors. It's illegal for anybody to call a doctor to inquire about his or her patients, so your confidentiality is assured. This is important because most people are comfortable with their doctors and some doctors only accept payment from specific carriers/networks, which narrows down your options if you want to keep your current doctor(s).

8) What "specifically" do you want your insurance plan to cover for you and your son?

9) Do you or your son have any pending medical visits, testing, etc. that have not been completed or discussed?

10) Are you currently pregnant or do you plan on getting pregnant within the next 12 months?

Any agent you talk with is going to ask you these questions and then some in order to help you effectively and ethically. I normally take around 25-45 minutes with a prospective client before we talk about potential quotes.

If somebody just wants quotes the conversation gets reduced to about 2 minutes. But that is just how I conduct business. To each their own.

It's imperative that if you do go online, DO NOT SIGN UP FOR ANYTHING w/out having information sent to you beforehand so you can look at ALL of your options. If you feel pressured, tell the person to slow down and that you would like time to consider all of your options. As you probably know, purchasing a health plan is an important decision and commands proper education, attention and time.

Hope this helps.

Me?......I am 44 years old, I'm 5' 2" and weigh 120lbs. I DO smoke. I don't have Medical or Dental Insurance. The only thing I DO have is Life insurance, through the military (for myself). My son is 15 years, 5' 5" and weighs 160 ( a bit on the 'chubby' side). NO...he doesn't smoke. I'm looking for Dental/Health insurance, for me. I'm looking for Life insurance for my son. He is covered, Medically/Dental, through his father. I'm a divorced, single mom. Looking for a Life (Whole Life) that builds 'cash' value'. I'm 'low income'. Hope this is enough information. GUEST. If not, I'll be more than happy to 'add' to my information.

Hello Everyone!
I recently had a great experience with a health insurance broker that I want to share. I'm local here in Lancaster, PA and had been putting off getting insurance because I figured it would be very time consuming and a big hassle. Finally, I decided I could wait no longer and was put in touch with Jesse Smedley of Smedley Insurance Group. Within a very small period of time Jesse was able to recommend a plan that is a perfect fit for my needs and was able to explain the policy to me clearly even though I am completely health insurance-illiterate! There was no waiting period either... I saw the doctor 3 days after receiving my policy! For those of you that do not have health insurance, I strongly recommend that you give Smedley Insurance Group a call!
