I have a double wide that use to just sit on piers. A few months ago I moved it onto a permenant basement foundation. I am trying to get my insurance comapny to insure it on a reg. homeowners policy which is alot cheaper than a mobile home policy.
I was told they were going to check into it but most won't ualify for the other type of policy. I have had recent electrical and plumbing inspections when setting it up in this new location. Why would it not be viewed as a reg. policy if it is no longer "mobile"?

Ever seen an overhead shot of mobile home parks after a hurricane? That is why insurance companies treat them differently.

It's still "mobile" as it simply needs to be unsecured and can be moved again. Try that with a house.

Okay. This makes sense except it has no axles anymore and is welded to the foundation. SO in others words no matter what I do to this place like add on split entry, put ceilings and rooms in the basement and what else they will never consider it a real home because it has metal framing under it?

Try several other carriers...some have different rules and if the home is permanently secured (as you stated) you can get an HO policy...(worked several claims that way)...just check around.

Thanks. That is what I am hoping for. I looked forward to lower insurance costs when we went with the full foundation. I am waiting for my ins. company to get back to me. The agent said he would see what he could do so my fingers are crossed.

In the meanwhile, I'd call about three (atleast) other carriers and get some quotes...don't cost anything, and you don't have to switch that way when your other claim is done you will be ready to make a move if necessary and know where you are going. Wink

Excellent idea. When we combined all out construction loans and house payment to a home ewuity loan I got some really great quotes. that was in Jan. I took down the name of the person the bank referred me to and told her as soon as all this settles I would get back with her.
