Hi Jocelyn, you should have checked it earlier. If the employer isn't offering the STD plan, you could have enrolled with a private coverage provider. However, most of the insurer will consider pregnancy as a pre-existing condition and hence you were required to sign-up for the plan before conceiving.
You may still enroll for a short term plan to cover future pregnancy and illnesses. However, your present condition and maternity leave will not be covered.
Short term disability policy will cover your future pregnancies, its complications and illnesses. However, STD benefits will not be available for normal child birth.
Here are few additional facts regarding the STD plan….
If you decide to pay for the STD plan with post tax dollars, the benefits that you may receive will be tax free.
You can't receive benefits under your fiancé's policy till you're married.
Honey, you should have considered enrolling yourself with the plan before getting pregnant. However, its always better late than never.
hello i am 7 1/2 months pregnant i was put on bedrest but my job doesnt offer my anything like short term disability. Is there anything i can do??
Jocelyn, not sure whether or not there is anything available at this time short of public assistance.
Are you covered by a major medical plan at work? If so, do you have maternity benefits included? If both of these are a "Yes", I would contact the health plan carrier and tell them that your doctor prescribed bed rest as part of your prenatal care and see if any benefits are available.
If the answer is "No", I just can't think of anything to help you. _________________
It really is sad when something like this happens. It can rfeally add so much more stress to a pregnancy. I know a lot of people don't like to consider welfare but if its needed then you should go try to qualify. It will also give you good medical benefits since you are having a tough preganancy and pay the delivery. Hope you and your baby are getting better. Congradulations and Good luck.
