It's been 52 days since I discovered my cargo trailer missing from my property upnorth, our weekend place. So we called the police made a report then called my insurance. So they investigated it the trailer is still missing plus the contents. While they were talking to my neighbors up north one neighbor said they thought I gave my trailer away to someone. What the hell now the insurance wants a statement from me. Which is fine I have nothing to hide, and I'm really mad the
inurance would even question my claim.
So is this normal for insurance co. The adjuster said after I make a statement they would go from there. I'm not sure what that means.
HELP need your thoughts on this.....

I am not an expert but I would think if a statement like your neighbors was made that they would have to do an investigation into it. I would comply with the adjuster and try to work through the issue in a calm manner. There are others on here who can give you some good solid advice. Hang in there and do not get too upset, this truly sounds like routine.

Is is normal that they would at least like to have a formal statement from you when you claim that your trailer was stolen yet your neighbor states you gave it to someone? You do the math.

All claims are investigated...it is just to different degrees. In your case, you do not live at this house all of the time and they would want to see if they could find out from people that are in the area what might have happened. Like Tcope stated, your neighbor's statement isn't really speeding the process along. You may want to speak to your neighbors to see who might have made this statement, unless you already know, to see if it was actually made. I work for insurance companies, but I wouldn't put it past some....you figure it out.

Why are you mad? They don't know you personally...If you were in their place with what you (nice) neighbor told them what would you think?

So is this normal for insurance co

Certainly! They/We can't just pay a claim without investigating it...you may not ever think of commiting insurance fraud, but there are plenty that do..trust me!

The adjuster said after I make a statement they would go from there.

ok, is it just a statement or a statement under oath?

I'm not sure what that means.

It means they are going to do a THROUGH investigation...they will likely request your phone records, they WILL do a credit check if they haven't already, and maybe exam under oath by you and any family members..

Just be honest and forthright, if you have nothing to hide, then provide them with what they need.

I can understand the investigation. There truly is a lot of insurance fraud..not saying you are trying the same thing.
Look at it from another point. If someone threw a rock through your window and your neighbor saw someone he thinks he could identify..wouldn't you want them to investigate the matter?
Not investigation means they would not be doing their job...not doing their job means higher rates for everyone including you. They simply can not afford (and neither can you) to take everyone at their word...imagine the rate hikes.

The OP (unintentionally I'm sure) started another thread rather than continueing this one..I'm entering their post here, and deleting the other thread. lori

Talked to the insurance adjuster the other day said we would make a statement under oath. Then received a letter from an attorney telling us where to go for an examination under oath. Isn't there a difference between the two. Also to bring proof of ownership of the trailer, also repair receipts. Also tax returns and pay stubs. Hasn't this gone from a neighbor saying they know something, to us having an examination under oath? We haven't even been to our house where the trailer was in months.

So what do we do? We sure are not quility of any thing. And the Insurance co. are making us feel that we are. Need some advise and maybe a lawyer.

No it's the same, all exam's under oath (that I've been to) have always been at an attorneys office, a court reporter is there and someone that can swear you in..

No, I would expect all of these requests, (minus the EUO), with any complete theft, plus maybe your phone records, and they will definately run a search for any prior thefts or burns, and a credit check..

We haven't even been to our house where the trailer was in months.

That really doesn't have anything to do with proof of ownership etc..

So what do we do? We sure are not quility of any thing. And the Insurance co. are making us feel that we are. Need some advise and maybe a lawyer

If you have nothing to hid, the provide all proof requested completed the EUO, and when it's all over and you've been paid send your neighbor a thank you note! If you want to consult an attorney that's certainly your right, (as well as your cost), but if you look at your policy it will tell you that you must cooperate, and if you want the claim paid, then you need to complete their requests, I see nothing here that is out of the ordinary etc. Which most likely is what an attorney will tell you...But I'm telling you for free rather than charging you a couple of hundred bucks!

When is the EUO? And do you have all the information they requested gathered? Have you EVER had a complete theft or fire?

Yes 2 years ago I had a car stolen and they found 3 days later stripped and the ignition punched so they paid on it. But other than that I haven't even had a traffic ticket in 39 years. We are quite boring and don't get involved in other people's business. That's why I'm surprised the insurance co. would believe the neighbor's because if I gave my trailer away wouldn't I sign the registration off to the new owner's. I think the insurance co. is fishing sorry but my husband and myself have nothing to hide.

... and the plot thickens.

What Tcope means by that Hammer's mom, is if you have had ANY prior thefts or fires, this is another red flag to your carrier...It doesn't mean you did anything wrong, it just requires more investigation. Add a prior vehicle theft, to the neighbor's story and then another total theft, well then you have more red flags...Also if your credit is in trouble...or if you've been late on some payments etc. That's yet another red flag.

We don't think that you've done anything wrong, heck we don't know you. We're just trying to give you some unbiased reasons why this investigation is going the way it is.

You have NEVER had any other thefts, or fires? Is your credit/payment history in decent shape? Have you EVER had ANYTHING repossed? These all add fuel to the fire. Just be honest, and you'll do fine.

(incidently when my son was in school and played football his nickname was 'the hammer', and I too was the Hammer's mom  )
