Yes . . . unless you intend to commingle everything and get yourself in trouble with all manner of taxing authorities.
Two separate businesses . . . two separate FEINs. _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. CA Insurance Lic #0596197. Also investigating insurance company abuses, and providing litigation support/expert witness services. Send me your questions, and I'll send you my answers. |

Great post and very thorough. Could there be a bit of confusion toward the end of the article? It states you should use SSN to purchase insurance, then goes on to explain that you use FEIN for corps, partnerships, etc.
It seems to me that the purpose of FEIN is to identify a business. I would never use my SSN to purchase insurance for my corp. The corporate veil may be compromised if I mix personal information with corporate info. What are your thoughts? |

When you review the IRS guidance for FEIN, you'll see that since a corporation, partnership, LLC, or LLP cannot have a SSN, it must have a FEIN. Sole-proprietors who have employees are encouraged to obtain a FEIN.
Persons who are in the United States to conduct business but do not intend to seek residency status yet may have a personal income tax liability as a result of their business activities (or investments) applies for a TIN (Taxpayer ID Number).
Although not prohibited, however, the IRS prefers that self-employed sole-proprietors who are not incorporated, and who do not have or intend to have employees, use their SSN for tax reporting purposes rather than a FEIN so that they do not list multiple numbers referring to themself on the same return (in addition to that of a spouse as joint filer and children or other dependents). Just too confusing.
Hope this helps. _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. CA Insurance Lic #0596197. Also investigating insurance company abuses, and providing litigation support/expert witness services. Send me your questions, and I'll send you my answers. |

This last one may be the one you are seeking. As a Nevada corporation, it may still exist. I'll leave that up to you. As a last resort, you can contact the IRS. Should be public record information, especially if you are a former employee, or the heir of a former employee, or other person of "interest" with a legitimate right to know

Did you apply for a FEIN as a business owner? If so, you can go to any IRS office and obtain a copy of your FEIN. _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. CA Insurance Lic #0596197. You need to give it to them because they asked for it. It's how they track you in their computer systems, and it allows them to match your records to things like your wage and tax reporting for Workers' Compensation premium audits. _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. The only way to apply for a FEIN is through the IRS, listing the corporation as the entity applying for the number, and the application must be signed by an executive officer of the corporation. _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. If the two businesses are in fact the same company, just using slightly different names in each location, it would not be prohibited to use the same FEIN for both. But if one is operating in Missouri and the other is operating in Virginia, each company will have a separate State EIN, as that number will be necessary for reporting state income taxes, not the federal taxes.
There's nothing YOU can do about the FEIN that a business uses. If they are not properly filing quarterly taxes/returns, that's a different story. _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. CA Insurance Lic #0596197.
