Hi..I am Mira Jovovich...planning to go for a group health plan offered through my recent employment. I'd better note any of the health insurance acts which may govern such group plans..any volunteers?

My friend, I know one such act that you've inquired about..Women's Health & Cancer Rights Act - 1998.
WHCRA is meant to cover mastectomies after consultation with you & the physician under whom you are being treated. It is aimed at re-constructuring of breasts & the associated health hazards. I'd suggest you visit the site dol.gov in this respect. Regards, Matebubbles

Thanks Matebubbles..

Also would like to throw some light upon the Mental Health Parity Act -'96 (which is actually a federal law) which restricts any group health plan from stating an yearly or lifelong $ limits upon mental health benefits which seem less advantageous than the yearly or lifelong $ limits for medically operational benefits associated with a plan.

It is mostly designed for group plans that cover an excess of 50 workers. Again it would not be in force towards coverage in an individual market. Also would like you to note that it is often state specific.

Hi..

The newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act would influence the duration of time for which a mother & her child would enjoy a covered stay in a hospital (post the birth of the child). It would be acting upon you irrespective of whether you own an individual coverage or a group plan.

The 48 hour-period would commence since a woman delivers at the hospital. In some cases, where the delivery has taken place outside the hospital, over there the period commences from the admission to the hospital.

Now how do we forget the much talked about HIPAA -96 ??

Quote:
HIPAA protects your rights from being excluded or denied of any health related benefits under the group health insurance plans. It prohibits employers from practicing discrimination against employees on the basis of their health status.

If you'd wish to know more about HIPAA, you may go through my article regarding its benefits at the AmPminsure-guide section.
