Has wikipedia explained Health insurance correctly?

Going thru the wikipedia..I learnt that disability insurance & long-term care constitute a part of health insurance. Is it true? So, if I possess disability policy does that indicate that there is no need to buy another health insurance?

Hey Bonnie, don't get the wikipedia wrong!
I searched for health insurance at the wikipedia...only to find that disability falls under the broader classifictaion of health insurnace. Longterm care also shares the same view. But make sure that health insurance is meant to offer you the general medical benefits while disability is meant to help you in times of crisis when you can't work due to any grave accident..hence the need for both!

Had each one of these policies been similar at all things, then why do they exist separately?
See, disability would cover your sufferings due to certain serious illnesses..but that doesn't reduce your need for taking up a 'critical illness program'!
Why I say this, is due to the fact that disability would only reimburse you to the extent of the illness diagnosed..but a critical illness insurance would disburse the entire policy value!
So, you see why this is important?

hey!
See, Longterm care is undoubtedly a health coverage, but you must remember that it is meant for a certain phase in your life when you've grown older & need to be covered for certain special symptoms. It would thus fetch a higher premium than a normal health insurance policy but the benefits are more powerful since its designed for the old-age people.
Wish you get the best one! Plasmahectic

Disability only covers loss of wages due to illness or accident. Disability is based on a percentage of your wage (usually 60% but can be purchased for higher values, but always in relation to you current income). Their are two major forms. Short Term and Long Term. There is usually a waiting period for such policies to be in effect. For example, some Long Term policies only go into effect after you have been "off work" for 6 months. This does not cover current medical expenses or the 6 months in which you will not be receiving a paycheck. Whether they are termed health insurance or not is irrelevant. I recommend that all who can afford it have some form of Primary Health Coverage (catastrophic or High Deductible at a minimum), and a Short Term and Long Term Policy that coincide in terms of effective dates (so there is no lag in coverage) Look to Plasmahectic's interp of long term care. This is a good add on for those that are reaching retirement or have parents living with them as dependants.

- By the way, nice forum!

I'm not a big fan of Wikipedia. I heard a news story one time that people change stories about themselves or their company to make it sound better. Example, someone from Fox News edited a portion of the Fox News Wikipedia, possibly removing some type of scandal information or bad press. Since it is user edited, I feel there is always going to be a chance for inaccurate information. Luckily since there is a large community of contributors, any discrepancies can be challenged and reviewed and if necessary, corrected. I would look elsewhere for information on something as important as health insurance.

A health insurance license allows an agent to sell disability insurance, long-term care and accident insurance.

However, only health insurance will pay your doctor if you are sick. Accident insurance policies can also pay for medical care, but there are limits on what it will pay.

Disability insurance can replace some of your paycheck if you are injured and unable to work.

Long-term care is a type of disability insurance that is designed to pay if you are in need of nursing home care, or home health care.

Each type of insurance is important and there is very little overlap.

Hi TheInsuranceFiles,

I'm sure wikipedia is a good place to search for relevant information on any topic...it is a hub of pretty many learned minds...& there are pages where only 1 person would act as the moderator..but yeah it is a bit problem if too many cooks spoil the broth!

I would look elsewhere for information on something as important as health insurance.

Forum based communities like ours could be a real solution to all your problems...we have separate domains of targeted issues...where you may start you thread upon your choice topics & come to a great help to all those who might be looking for you!

Well, from a broader perspective health, disability and long term care, all can be kept under a single head, as they all cater to some or the other form of health perils. But they vary widely in terms of the coverage offered by each.

Health insurance, covers the expenses of health care, like- the doctor's visits, prescription drugs, hospitalization expenses and such, whereas, disability insurance covers the loss of income, that an individual is like to lose during the phase of disability. Disability insurance doesn't cover the medical expenses.

Long term care policy, only covers the expenses of skilled or unskilled care.

Health insurance and disability insurance are actually quiet different ,though they appear the same on casual perusal .If you just dig a bit deep you will understand the difference between the two and also the importance of both the two.Health insurance is for paying your medical expenses when you fall sick.Disability insurance comes into play when you can't work or continue your occupation which sustains your life ,I mean which earns you bucks for you to live .Usually a disability follows after some sickness .So though they appear the same they are completely different and you need to possess both ..
