SR-22 is the proof of financial liability issued to an individual by the insurance company. You may be asked by the law enforcement authority to obtain SR-22 form if you are caught for ‘driving without insurance'. You may also require SR-22 to retain your driving privileges if convicted for gross traffic violation. Normally, one need to carry SR-22 for three years and is required to maintain necessary coverages for this time period. Your license will automatically get revoked if your policy lapses or get cancelled during this tenure.

Take care, Cynthia

Hi Cameron, have you faced any issue regarding SR-22? If so, let me know that. Probably then we will be able to help you in a better way.

SR-22 form requirements vary widely with state guidelines. Therefore, requirements of one state may not apply to another. Moreover, some states like- Delaware, Minnesota and Kentucky do not require SR-22 at all. Therefore, if you reside in any of these states you don't have to carry SR-22. But in case, you have moved to any of these states from another state where you have carried SR-22, you will then be required to continue with the coverage of your former state.

Your insurer will directly file the SR-22 from with the state motor vehicle department. You can also obtain non-owner SR-22 if you don't own a car. But remember that only few authorized insurance companies can only issue SR-22 and not all. Normally, the firms which write policies for high-risk-drivers are allowed to write SR-22 forms.

Hope the input helps. Juanita

Good information in these posts! The laymen way of understanding an SR22. No one gets one because they want one. They are ordered to get one, (and expensive). Generally as or in conjunction with punishment for some poor driving behavior (dwi/dui, accident without insurance etc). Basically what an SR22 says, is the insurance company that issues one, agrees to insure this person (basically) no matter what fool thing they may do while driving their vehicle, the insurance company agrees to cover them. I'm being silly (some) but in affect they will cover anything.
