Call your state unemployment office and see if you can file for an extension. These rules are changing quickly and most states are offering extension beyond the time normally given.

That and you also need to keep motivated and in good health!

Most of the states have the extended unemployment insurance benefits under which the benefits would get extended beyond the standard 26 weeks. Do as tcope has said, contact the state unemployment department to know about your options.

I'd just like to make sure that the OP would be able to file for this extension even after the coverage has lapsed. Doesn't he need to file for an extension before maturity?

I guess the notification comes from the state uninsured department's side. You'd get notification once you exhaust all the receivable benefits under the unemployment benefits.

The state would extend the benefit period depending upon the unemployment rate of the area. Hence, the state unemployment rate might also play an important role in this regard.

Some states are even offering retraining programs. Here in PA we have a Career Link where people will work with you to help you find a job or do some type of retraining. If there is a program available in your area then you may want to take advantage of them since eventually extensions would end. I know there is a long line of different types of extensions state depending so why not go on down to the unemployment office and inquire there. They would have knowledge of all the programs and extensions that would help you and may even be able to direct you to a retraining program. Good luck.

In SC, there are job search activity visits and an unemployed individual meets with someone in the office. It is scheduled every 6-8 weeks and one should fall several weeks before benefits are due to run out. They will give you all the information you need regarding extensions, but they often come with strings attached such as time spent in the unemployment office, etc.
