Insurance question relating to medical testing

by avengerki » Thu Jan 10, 2008 01:59 am

Ok me and a friends were discussing some things earlier today. She had a doctor's appointment to get an STD/Aids test done, which she gets done every year. She was told by another person that getting the test every year will put her in a high risk category.
When she went and got the testing she asked the nurse the nurse said that it wouldn't affect her medical insurance but might affect her life insurance.

My question is would it affect any insurance premiums or eligibility? The only reason she gets tested is more of a preventative thing since her lifestyle doesn't really call for it.

I have to ask... how would a test prevent an infection?

Well it would help prevent a spread of the infection. Its just one of those things she gets checked yearly with her physical. And some are treatable. Wouldn't you like to know?

Her having herself tested yearly for std's would beg to differ...on paper that is! (please don't think I'm arguing the point) just 'on paper' (which is all the insurance companies would see) one might think, ''well, jane got her std tests again, hope she's clean 'this year''see what i mean? So from a life ins stand point (if that's true and I doubt it is)...the assumption could be made that she must be in a high std risk factor otherwise why would she get tested so often...understand...I personally agree though that ANYONE that is sexually active and not in a long term manog. relationship SHOULD certainly be tested yearly at least!

Ya she has been with the same person for about 4 years not married, doesn't use drugs. She just doesn't want to sudden;y find out she has an std(probably meaning her boyfriend is cheating on her). But I totally agree with you Lori at least on paper shewould look high risk. apparently the reason she was given forit not affecting her medical insurance is its through work. I actually get a yearly std check through my work but that is because I have the possibility of being exposed to other peoples blood. No I am not in the medical field just an emergency responder for my work. Of course in the past couple of years they keep cutting down on the number of stds they actually check for. And throgh a different program at work I get yearly cholesterol and body fat checking. Its pretty nice to have.

well that bites....(to have that thought after four years! )

My son used to be a prison guard (thank the Lord he no longer is) he was exposed more than once to bleeding inmates with really really bad diseases (hep c / aids) and was tested like you are, no explaining waiting on those results let me tell you (my step dad recently died from hep c he contracted via heart surgery in 1981, so we knew the horrors of this disease!)...

I still don't think though that she could have any life insurance problems unless she is positive for these std, I doubt they check to see what 'tests' a person has....agents? is this correct?

That is what I was thinking Lori since its not that she has any std's it is that she is just being cautious and maybe a little hypochondriatic. Thank you for your replies.
