Just a little confused. What made you think you "had" auto insurance and what made you understand that you "didn't"?

On top of what Insurance Maze mentioned... my answer would be... obtain car insurance.

Can you call the company that you think you have the insurance with, have you been paying premiums on car insurance, if you went passed the grace period and they had to reinstate it, they will send a non insured letter to the department of transportation. I have had this happen to me, when I thought I had more time to pay it and ended up paying a reinstatement fee, just a few bucks, it was only with in hours of expiration on mine, thought I had till 12:00 am the next day and did not. Could this be the case, if so, just call the insurance company and make sure that they have reported that you do indeed have insurance.

Sorry OP, I don't understand how you ''thought'' you had insurance, and now don't...did you 'think' you paid the premium, but didn't? Please explain this....and of course GET INSURANCE ON YOUR CAR!

Just get insurance on the car now. If your insurance is still current, find out by contacting your insurance company, have them fax proof of insurance to your local dmv or fax number on the letter you got. Then follow it up and make sure they recieved the fax.

The rest of you are right, plus the fact that we don't have enough information to accurately respond to the OP.

The OP didn't state who "they" are that's requesting the proof of coverage, nor the reason why "they" were asking in the first place. In most mandatory insurance states, there are rules and laws that allow the states to randomly audit the registered vehicles in that state to see if the owner is following the financial responsibility or insurance laws.

A second reason as to why "they" could ask for proof is that there was a recent accident or ticket issued with that vehicle being the car that was in a wreck or the driver of that car being cited for a traffic infraction. Did that make any sense? I hope so.

The last reason is what the OP "kind of" alluded to: he/she was in an accident/got a ticket, the insurance was lapsed (for whatever reason), and the OP now has an uninsured accident or got ticketed and had no coverage. Either way...there's nothing that you can normally do that will apply retroactively to save your backside.

A last option could be your agent, his level of trust and longevity with that carrier, and your length of time/track record with the insurer. If you have had no trouble with them prior, been with them a long time, had a history or paying your premium on time, you notified them within hours of the lapse, and your agent has a really good relationship with his underwriter- they MAY ( stress...MAY) reinstate you with what's referred to as "no lapse in coverage." This is a real long shot, and if during the lapse there was an accident or ticket, you realistically have no chance with this option.

In any case, get insurance now; either reinstate your former coverage if the insurer will allow it, or buy new coverage. At times, you can get a little leniency with the courts if you prove you've gotten coverage in the meantime. Good luck.
