I had always believed that Disability insurance doesn't cover issues related to pregnancy. Now-a-days I'm hearing more about this Maternity disability insurance and would surely like to know more about it!

Maternity disability insurance is certainly a good thing for pregnant women. It's quite natural for all women to stay out of work during pregnancy. You should never be afraid of taking your pregnancy disability payments. The PDA is there to protect you from any kinda discrimination.

It isn't available in my state (Connecticut). It appears to be available in Texas and some other sites.

I did a Google search. I was able to find some commercial sites that indicated that maternity insurance was available for pregnancy in several sites. However, when I restricted my search to .gov (government) sites I was unable to confirm it.

Maybe some of the other agents who work in states where this mandate is in effect can tell us more about it.

In states where PDA is not available, what do they have in lieu of this?

There are five states with mandatory short term disability that covers pregnancy and maternity leave. They are: California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

Private coverage is available in all 50 states, but these policies are not sold direct to individuals. They are sold through groups on a voluntary basis by payroll deduction.

Normal pregnancy and delivery is a covered benefit: six weeks for vaginal birth, eight weeks for c-section delivery less the elimination period. Complications of pregnancy are also covered. Coverage must begin before getting pregnant.

So maternity benefits and PDA are the same thing?
