How much does a claims adjuster make?

I looking at becoming an insurance adjuster. I've been in residential design, surveying, scouting, and construction for 19 years. It seems there would be a need for adjusters at the hard hit areas of the USA and i was wondering if this is a good field to be in. How much money can an adjuster make? How difficult is it to become one? - thanks!!!

I have been adjusting with a friend in Ike. I had no license came with to help. worked for 5 weeks. learned insurance macros and got systems down. Had a manager of vendor pull me off to side asked my goals. In short told him couldn't do at the time. Told me that when i decided to do that id be a fat-cat. I would hit the ground running. i have 25yrs experience in construction industry primary commercial with superintendent experience. This year i took off to work for little or nothing for my church on a commercial bldg. purchase and ran demo/remodel converting to church. I pretty much spent my savings doing this. been called by independent company to work for them for sandy. i loved doing the adjusting when did it. is there a way to do if low on funds. Im looking of turning down for now a 80k/yr job as a supt. in large commercial company for this. any ideas thoughts suggestions.??

Independent insurance adjusters can easily bill for over $1,000.00 per day. Even as a newbie. I have been adjusting for 2 years now and even with my first claims I was pulling in over $800.00 per day of work. Good independent adjusters can easily make over $100,000.00 per year (as long as you produce quality work, your company will keep deploying you). Can anybody tell me how much does a crop insurance adjuster make? My uncle was in the field and he made huge. But I wanted to know about today's market. What are the opportunities and with which companies?

Who are the companies who pay their CAT adjusters best? What is a typical commission rate per claim?

To the post above:

It would be nice if there was a clear answer to that, wouldn't it?

The answer to that question is always changing. Today, Company X pay have an awesome pay scale with Carrier A, but tomorrow, Company Z comes along offering the same service for a bit cheaper and slowly but surely Company Z is out. Then Company A comes along and sells their stellar service for top dollar to Carrier B. You manage to get a 70% cut rather than a 60% cut from Company Z making it a bit better than the 60% you were getting from Company... you get the point.

Plus, regionally, pay varies. Someone's "OMG this pay is great!" may really be "This pay is eh" to others. The only way to truly find out is to apply, find out if they have claims in your area, and view their fee schedule.

I got starting doing property adjusting just over 2 years ago with no real training. I took a terrible Xact 27.5 course months prior. While figuring thing out on my own, someone told me that if you aren't making over $100k in this business (indy-adjusting) you're doing something wrong....

My 2014 income plus 2015 projected income will exceed $300k.

For all you new independent adjusters like me who is trying to get deployed. Never give up no matter what. Always stay consistent. I was at a point where i wanted to give up so bad. I had all the software training such as Mitchell,Xactimate,Nextgen,CCC Pathways,Xactcontents. I obtained 8 licenses, popular ones such as TX,SC,MS,OK and others. Still no call from vendors. I waited months still no call. I was at my boiling point. So i called Pilot,Worley, Eberls and asked them all why aren't im getting deployed. I have all these licenses and certs what is the problem? Now take head new adjusters. I was told i did everything backwards. I was told you will have a greater chance of getting deployed with your 1 license (home license) and SF Auto/property cert than 8 licenses with no SF Auto/Property. So all this time i was worried about getting all these licenses but all the vendor wants it the SF and Allstate certs. I was in complete awe. So i went to the next SF training snd i tell you i got my first deployment within a week of getting my SF cert.

Wow! Great thread for anyone considering an career as an insurance adjuster. It would definitely help to take some field experience along with the certs for your long-term prospects. By the way, I always tell people to get some years in as a staff adjuster before they take on being an independent adjuster.
