My wife and I live in Pa. My daugher is at college in Boston Ma. She has her pa drivers license. She comes home infrequently and rarely drives. We have 2 cars in pa. with another teen driver about to be added to our policy. Does my daughter need to be on this policy as the company suggests? The quote we got included $400.00 for her.

Does she need to be added? No. Should she? Yes.

Chances are good that your policy will not be renewed if she is not added... especially if the insurance company is "requesting" that she be added.

Either she is going to drive your vehicles or she is not. If she is not going to drive, your insurance company _may_ agree to keep the policy in-force if your exclude her from coverage. They may not do this as in most areas coverage would still need to be extended.

I'd think that many insurance companies would underwrite the policy and assign a premium charge based on the info that your daughter won't be driving much. I'd say $400 sounds like it reflects this info.

There is _still_ an exposure to liability that the insurance company is accepting as your daughter can and will be driving your vehicles. They should be able to collect a premium for this exposure.

Hi Jamey, though she comes to house rarely but she still stays in the same household when she comes right, if that is the case the insurer would insist that she gets added to the policy as driver.

However, you may put her as the 'excluded driver' in your policy which would imply that she wouldn't be allowed to drive your car. And the insurance company wouldn't cover any claim arising from her driving the car as an excluded driver.

Hope it clarifies.

Jamey, its not only you that look only towards the short term gains. Most of the time we all turn blind to the future consequences. You may be able to save some money by not adding the daughter in your policy but you may end up paying thousand towards auto claim if you make the mistake of allowing her to drive the car.

You may wish to shop around if the rates are too high and settle for cheaper rates.
