Lori, I can understand how drivers ed would come into play here but what about the GPA? Does that help show responsibility or what. I haven't had a child get their license yet so I will find this info helpful in the future. Thanks
Depending on what state you live in the rate could be vastly different.
Having a good GPA can get you a pretty big discount depending on the insurance company you deal with.
You have to contact various insurance companies and find out a price range to gauge off of.
Also you might want to look at getting a policy with your parents because it will make the cost a little less extreme for your first policy as well as they might be able to get you a better price with more than one vehicle or different driver statuses.

States have different rates. An agent will need your name, DOB, SSN, address, VIN number, etc.

This is good that they offer better insurance if your GPA is high. We need to do everything we can to keep our kids in school and earning good grades. Most parents who have a responsible teen will add them.

I would suggest that you choose another vehicle before you call insurance agents for an auto insurance quote. Your insurance premium will probably be much more than your car payment.
It will help you financially if you choose a starter vehicle of less value so you can start your auto insurance with mimimum coverage (liability and uninsured motorist). The comprehensive and collision coverages on a $30,000 vehicle, at your age, will be very expensive.

I agree with Lori, insurance rates are going to be high for anyone of your age. However, good grade and a decent car can help you in moderating the rates to some extent.
Fireyone, its important that the young driver chooses a car that's not too expensive and flashy. Obviously, a latest model car will cost more in terms of insurance coverage and hence as premium.
The young driver should opt for a car that is secured and has security features embedded in it. A second hand cheap car may help the driver to lower his rates further since he may not require to carry the collision and comprehensive coverage on it.

Thats the reason why I would personally get my teen something in the lines of a cavalier or older grand am. Boy getting started sure isn't easy.I never got my license until I was 25 and married so I didn't see too many effects on our insurance.
