Hi friends!

Yours is a truly wonderful forum..so please guide me regarding a simple thing.
If I'd need to go on a trip abroad, do I get coverage under my U.S. auto insurance policy?
I have plans to move to Mexico or Canada within a couple of months. So, what do ya think!

Hi my friend,

What I may tell you regarding this is that your auto policy has a specified territory within which it operates. In our case, it is operating over the U.S., the adjacent territories or Canada. Hence, I don't think additional coverage would be needed for your trip to Canada. Lets see what the others have to say in this regard.

Guys,

Actually, most of the auto policies would not cover us beyond the United States, the territories under it or Canada. So, under most circumstances when we are on a visit to a foreign land we'd need to obtain car insurance from a rental auto co. that is registered under the country we are visiting. So, I guess things are clearer now!

Are you moving, going on a trip or both? You need to take out your policy and read the Coverage Territory provision. Either that or ask your agent. While most policies will cover you in the US, Puerto Rico and Canada, each policy can be slightly different.

If you move, you will need to change your policy anyway, so that is a moot point.

Well I'm going on an official trip for about 3 months.

So, you mean the policies would cover across countries that are recognized under the automobile insurance laws in U.S. Am I right!

Yup, tcope has asked the most important question….moving and making a trip are two different things.

If you have decided to move to Mexico or to Canada, you are required to obtain the driving license of that country and also the auto coverage. However, if you're only making a trip then your current provider may extend its coverage to you in the foreign premises, though I think that no American auto insurer will extend the coverage to Mexico, but may cover you in Canada.

However, the best way to find it out is by asking your insurance agent.

No... the policy covers areas that it states it covers. It has nothing to do with US insurance laws.

Well, you'd certainly need to buy separate coverage for your visit to Mexico. I say this since the accidents within Mexico are governed under the Mexico Laws and the laws in U.S. have got nothing to do in this. It is therefore suggested that you obtain that you get a separate liability policy from a Mexican insurance co. All the best for your visit to Mexico!

Make sure that the company is registered and has the proper license to operate within Mexico. Many foreigners would just fall prey to crooks while failing to gather proper information regarding their chosen carriers. Look before you'd leap! Smile

While some of the insurance companies may cover you in Mexico, chances are more that you will not be covered. However, there is another catch, the Mexican government refuses to consider any policy as valid unless it is from a Mexican Insurance Company. So, if your trip/work lasts 3 months in Mexico, I would suggest you get a policy coverage from a Mexican Company Smile

Hi margo, if you are not living in the states closer to the Mexican border, you may not find your auto insurer covering you in the Mexican territory. However, the border states might have the ‘Mexican endorsement’ attached to their auto policies, which might cover them within the land of Mexico as well. But you should certainly ask your agent about it.

Thanks,

Our auto policy will entend 75 miles into Mexico for a max of 10 days. For
Canada, it is 30 days max but you have to increase your limits of liability to 50/100/50.

the ‘Mexican endorsement’

For anyone reading the very old post above about this topic, the Mexican endorsement is virtually worthless. In Mexico, failure to have a Mexican auto policy (may be purchased at the border from various agents) when involved in a collision, and you can expect to be thrown in jail -- it is a criminal offense!! You can argue all you want about having a US-issued auto policy with a Mexican endorsement or provision, but you have no civil rights in Mexico (no "reciprocity" there), and your argument will fall on deaf ears, although the corrupt hands that are associated with the deaf ears may gladly accept a couple of hundred dollars under the table to make the charges go away.

Now as to Javed's new post, US-issued PPO plans may cover health care expenses in Canada. HMO plans will only cover "emergency" health care. You'll just have to work with an experienced local agent/broker to find the right company for your needs.
