Depends on the type/size of the claim and how good you are at negotiating (injury claims) and if you are willing to give a min. of one third of your settlement to someone else.

I'm sure that no atty would be interested in handling a property damage claim. Therefore, you'll be responsible in settling one. But for personal injury and BI settlements an attorney can be hired depending upon, as Lori has mentioned, the nature of the claim and the amount of money involved in it.
