My son's license is suspended. While suspended it will expire and the state will not let him renew it until the suspension ends. Once over, (I think) they will be asking him to purchase an SR-22, but he rides a motorcycle, not a car and I am unable to find any companies that offer SR-22's for a motorcycle. How will he be able to get his license renewed/reissued for a motorcycle?

Guest,

In most states, he will need to get a non-owners policy for the SR-22. (In Ohio, he could get a financial responsibility bond.) Since he will also have a driver's license for four-wheeled automobiles, then the state will require an SR-22 to certify that he has coverage for an automobile with coverage that meets the state's financial responsibility limits. A motorcycle policy applies only to motorcycles, and as such it is not sufficient for an SR-22.

These rules vary from state to state, so if anyone else has more specific information for other states, please speak up.

We live in Texas, if that helps.

I think what I said above applies in Texas, but I cannot be sure. Does anyone else have more information pertaining specifically to Texas?

Hey Lauri, I've heard on Mckenna insurance who would provide Sr-22 for motorcycle.

Though there are plenty of insurers available to offer sr-22 for the car drivers, there aren't many who would cover motorcyclists. You can try the above mentioned company. Hope they do business in Texas.

Best of luck!

Well, I think that SR1P is the required form that needs to be filed instead of sr-22 for vehicles with less than four wheels, such as -motorcycle. But I'd suggest that you get it clarified from the DMV before beginning the search.

Thanks everyone. I'll look up the SR1P. My son is trying to get his act together and I suspect an SR-22 will be prohibitivly expensive. Motorcycle insurance is very doable and he already has the bike and prior insurance. I'm really hoping, for his sake, that this will be the way to go.
