Is it hard or more costly to get insurance once you have let it lapse?

YES (in captial letters)

I wonder if they even take your credit score into consideration when you purchase a policy

YES (again in caps, in states that allow it...shame in my opinion)

You can get coverage without paying them off. However, the old insurance company will report this to your credit report and most insurance companies look at this to base rates these days. This will cost you in the end. However, it is more important to get coverage promptly and pay off the other insurance company as you can, you may even consider making paymnet arrangements with them.

THERE IS NOTHING TO PAY OFF...the OP doesn't owe his prior carrier anything..

I currently have auto insurance with a company but it expires tomorrow. Is it possible for me to get another policy with a different company before it expires and still remain insured?
