Rental Reimbursement

by CrazedEpidemic » Tue Dec 30, 2008 06:34 am

I opted for rental reimbursement from geico. $30/900max. Does this guarantee that they will provide me with a rental. I am 19 years old and I only know of one small rental company that no one has heard of that will rent to me for no additional charge. I dont care what car they provide me but will I be able to get a rental. The big rental agencies that provide cars for under 24 charge about $50/day here in NY. Will I have to pay the difference plus the rental fees?

Hey Lori..as you've mentioned that there could be differences for a 'rental reimbursement' than a coverage..it would be better if you'd state the differences for us...say for example how things would differ in your state.

Its good to know that age may not matter. The way I look at it if someone around the younger age is resonsible enough to carry the coverage that has to show a little on their part.

Sorry, I should've explained  'rental reimbursement' is just that the insured pays and is 'reimbursed' based on their policy limits...rental coverage or loss of use, 'can' work the same, but generally rental is paid (per policy limits of course) directly to the the rental agency, the insured is not out of pocket...also loss of use, is paid a day rate, (whatever the policy says)...rental has a limit, say it's 30 a day, but if the carrier can get the insured in a rental for 25 a day then they would pay that, the 5 left over is not paid to anyone.

Glad somene asked that question. I thought I knew what the difference was but wasn't completely sure. Is loss of use usually paid by the other insurance company if their driver hits you? I added rental reimbursement a couple years ago but when I was hit I had to wait until the other driver made a report of the accident before I was supplied with another vehicle (rental). The other comapny paid not mine. I am thinking rental reimbursement comes into play if you yourself was "at fault" for an accident and you would need a vehicle until yours was repaired. Right?

typically but not always...

well not necessarily, if the other party is at fault, and they have to investigate it could take awhile, also say you hit one of your deer, it's a comp claim, your rental reimbursement would kick in then as well...when using your own policy regardless of the coverage, rental/repairs can begin immediately because the liability does not have to be completed PRIOR to beginning repairs..

Thanks for the explanation. Speaking of hitting a deer and rental coverage it reminds me of an issue I had with my insurance company.
A few years ago my hubby (of course) hit one wiht my grand am and took out the whole headlight section on the drivers side. We called the insurance company and THEY decided that I should not drive it into the repair shop for an estimate. They person (adjuster or rep?) set up for the garage to come and tow it, even though I wanted to just take it in. To make a long story short when the insurance company spoke to me later they said they could deny paying the towing charges since my car could have been driven into the garage. I told them that is what I wanted to do but was told not to by another person in the company. In the end they paid the towing.
The reason the first person said they did not want me to drive it in is because without the headlight and driving light on the drivers side it could eb considered a hazard and if something happened along the way when I was taking it in that claim could be denied. Never asked a lot of questions...just was glad the matter was resolved quickly.

WHO said that? someone from your agents office or the claims dept?

Any vehicle without ALL lights working is ''technically'' non-driveable...I'm anxious to here, which dept you heard this bs from.. :x

Hi, It had to be the claims dept. We called the 1-800 # to report the claim and this is what they told me..not to drive the car. The next day they called to let me know what plans were for the car and I spoke with someone different and thats when I got the line about not paying for the towing. I explained to that person what was said when I fisrt called in and she said she would let it go but next time we could easily tape the lens and save the towing expense. I was upset too but figured if I made too mauch of a stink she would not let the towing be paid and I would be responsible. So I see I did do the right thing in getting it towed. I was just following the first persons suggestion.
I did originally call my agent but they informed me that I had to call the claims dept. so they were not a part of any of this.

 Sorry I'd have had her butt in a sling over that one! :x That's just plain bs...which company is it? I'd be willing to bet that the VP of claims doesn't know that...this was clearly a stupid person you talked to, any time anyone even expresses the 'slightest' notion they are uncomfortable driving a vehicle after an accident most adjusters will insist it be towed....as an example let's say you followed her advise and taped it up, then on the way to the shop, you get in another accident because someone couldn't see your light...cha-damn-ching $$$$ that company would be on the hook for about a ga=zillion bucks...idiot .....i've never heard of an adjuster saying this...there are many times when owners will tell me, 'don't worry about towing i'll just tape it up and drive it in'' i always offer that they should let me tow it (and yes the conversation is recorded)...i just can't believe an adjuster is THAT stupid... fine, now my blood pressure is up...

Its Nationwide. What really irked me is we have been through them forever and even had times when we saved them money. For example I there has been a couple times we turned down the rental service even though we had it on our insurance since we had two other vehicles to drive. It was more for my own convience because I did not want the hassle of getting an returning a rental. At least I know for future reasons that the first person I spoke to was right to get it towed. I will remember this.
