Where do I find the value of a salvage vehicle?

by csavoie » Mon Nov 24, 2008 06:39 pm

I own a 2004 Nissan Sentra, bought it in 2005 with 5k miles on it and paid around $9.5k. It was a salvaged title. It now has around 80k miles and was totalled a couple weeks ago. The insurance company is only offering me $3k which is the balance of the loan. How do I fight this dollar amount? Where do I get back up to support my thoughts that I should be reimbursed more? Any help is appreciated!!

I live in Minnesota...

LOTS of cars total in Minn...they have a law that requires the owners permission to use aftermarket parts, (they must consent to it in writing)...which no one does, so lots of vehicles total...

Yeah Dave, if his policy has the appraisal clause he can invoke it if he disagrees...but he needs to see A) if it's there in the policy and B) if it will be worth the cost...depends how far apart they are and if we can pin point something they've missed or incorrect data....

I guess I'm not sure what damage they would deduct for unrepaired damage because there wasn't any....

If there wasn't any then there wasn't any...most people don't look at their own cars like 'they' were going to buy it...prior damage would be like, ripped seats, hail, impacts on the bumpers, (or anywhere other than minor door dings)...stained carpet and upholstry, cracked or chipped lamps, or glass those types of things...things YOU would notice if it were setting on a lot READY to sell...most cars this age will have some imperfections, and those are ok, it's the damage that would detract from the value that is deducted...clearly our ''guest'' is angry at progressive for pointing out (and deducting most likely) some unrepaired prior damage, but in truth all carriers, (or most especially the bigger ones that handle a lot of claims)...would do the same...and think about it this way, two cars absolutely IDENTICAL setting next to each other, only difference is one has a crack h/lamp, ripped drivers seat, and a couple of ''whiskey bumps' on the bumper covers, are you going to pay the same for both cars? Of course not...

Cs have you received a copy of their evaluation? If not you need to get that and look it over very well...let us know what it says, make sure that each and every option, mileage, model etc is correct.

I'm thinking about buying a salvage title car,(I live in MN also) and talked to my insurance company today(American Family), and they said they will only insure it to 50% of fair market value. Maybe that is where your number is coming from. They are starting at 50%, not 75%. Do the math from 50%, and see if that matches their offer.
