In most cases, insurance follows the car, then the driver. Now, the question is....did the unlicensed driver have permission to drive the car? If he did, insurance policy will most likely pay - although, I have heard of cases where the insurance wouldn't pay because the driver did not have a valid license.

I hate hearing cases like this. I am an honest person and pay my insurance and am licensed but gosh do I know so many people who think they can just by pass the whole drivers license thing. I could care less if they aren't covered since they were the stupid ones who thought that getting a license didn't amtter but how about their victims.
We had quite a few unlicensed drivers floating around our area and they even had the audacity to laugh about it...well I had the audacity to call teh police dept. with the make model and color of the vehicle they were runnig and feel I had the right to do it. I wouldn't want to be one of those people these careless people would hit. Not sure if it dod any good but I know the one living near my father doesn't drive the backways or anyways anymore. Wonder why? lol. |

There are some states that require you to show proof of insurance when you register your car each year. I LOVE that idea.
Unfortunately, TN doesn't do that.

Don't love it too much it really isn't worth much...we have it in MO, here's what happens (with the irresponsible) they get on line or go to an agent pay enough to get a proof of ins card register the vehicle then either cancel the policy or never pay another penny in premium and it cancels for non-payment...I see this ALOT.

Good point Lori. They do the same here when they get caught without insurance and have to go to court to show they now have it.

I have seen this done a million times over. Pa stopped this from happening because of the abuse. In PA if you drop your car insurance you will get a paper in the mail from the Dept. of Motor vehicles demanding the license plate for that vehicle to be sent in. I think this is a truly wonderful way.. i am sure somewhere there maybe cons to the idea but I think for the most part it works.
We took coverage off my hubbys Monte for the winter. With in weeks we recieved a letter to either put insurance back on the vehicle or surrender the plates. We figured it would be cheaper to just keep paying the insurance whether than go through the whole hasssle of getting new plates in the spring. |

That is a good way to handle it other states have similar laws..wish mine did!

| It is hard to believe that most states wouldn't have it this way. I believe it is only fair and would cut down on so many unlicensed or uninsured vehicles running the roads. The highway is already a disaster course as it is...The biggest thing that I hate when I actually drive is when someone doesn't use their turn signal or does so last minute. Thats when I know what road rage feels like. |
