I had this fender bender and the windshield got damaged. I'm not sure as to which section of my insurance does it come under!
Will my rates get altered due to this?

If the w/s damage is from the accident, and the other party is at fault then that carrier will pay for the w/s with the other damage. If it was your fault, and you have collision coverage on your vehicle your collision coverage will pay for the w/s along with the other damage. If the other party is uninsured, or not at fault and you do not have collision coverage, but do have comp coverage, your comprehensive coverage will cover the w/s only.

Thanks Lori, I was certainly not at-fault and I do have collision coverage. But, I'm really scared if I'd see a rate increase!

The windshield damage would be covered under your collision coverage policy if you are the at-fault party or if the other party is uninsured. If the other party is at-fault and if he is properly insured, his insurance company would be liable to pay for the damages. You must go through the surcharge schedule of your insurance company. It is the pre-determined increase in premium that is charged if you cause accident. Rates do increase after a claim is made. But most of the companies do not increase premium on the no-fault party.

Most of the glass damages that are caused due to car accidents are compensated under your comprehensive coverage. Windshields that are broken due to hooliganism or accidents are also covered under the comprehensive section.

Gotta correct ya' here Steven..If the glass breakage is caused by an accident then their collision coverage would include the glass damage assuming they have collision coverage...if no collision and only comp coverage, then even though it was broken in a collision, the comp coverage would pay for the glass only..

Actually it doesn't even have to be caused by a vandal..at least in all the auto policys I've read..'glass breakage'' is an actual peril listed under the comp coverage.

One of my favorites, and I just had another one this week...'there was a tiny chip in my w/s but the rear end hit caused it to crack all the way across"

If you're filing an auto glass claim with your insurer, then they might simply offer the contact information of a repairer. Over here, you should remember that you're not being transferred to someone who works with your carrier. Instead, they've referred you to a glass network dealing with cars.

If you are going for an auto glass claim, remember to do some research before you opt for the auto glass replacement service that best suits your needs. If your insurance company hands over the list of approved repair shops, do get the estimate from all the mentioned repair shops. Do not let the company decide it for you.

I don't know of a single carrier who does not have a preffered glass company network.

Waste of time. The only estimate a vehicle owner needs is one. Shopping for multiple estimates is just going to confuse the vehicle owner. When a carrier referes a shop to an insured/claimant, they only have to go to one of those preferred shops. On the other hand, the insured/claimant is not required to go to one of the preffered shops, they can go where ever they want.
