Glass

Last year I had a piece of debri from the road fly up and crack my windshield and crack it two days after my inspection. I called my insurance company only to find out that I do not have glass, I had it on my prior policy, this one was supposed to have the same coverage but I found out through experience that it does not.

Anyway, since the crack was near the bottom I waited till my next inspection, next week to get the windshield replaced. Since I had glass on my last policy I know that it was around $250 to replace one, I always had to pay the deductable of $50.

So now with no glass coverage, I shopped and found two shops that could replace my windsheild for $160, that included them coming and picking up the vehicle at my job.

My question is, why is it more for the insurance company to replace the windshield than if I pay for it out of pocket.

I am glad it is the lower price, but I think these prices on repair affect the cost our insurance premium. Is this common practice and why do the insurance carriers let this go on.

that's pretty much universal i think fred...and ''glass'' in and of it's self is a peril under comp, meaning if your glass is broken for whatever the reason...i'm confused by this ''glass coverage'' rather than glass covered by 'comp'.....

you forgot one fred...people... yep that's comp...comp really covers about anything other than a loss that would be considered a collision loss under the coverage...basicially comp is a collision with any other object that is mobil and hits you first...

I think it is comp too but lately when I began looking into different places for cheaper insurance quotes I ran across something that would apply to this post. One of the questions on there was "do you have glass coverage?" It made me think of this post right away. I still believe it may be comp but maybe it can be a part that you can either have or not have? This is why I could not work in the insurance world...seems really complicated.

it is complicated...i'm wondering if maybe PA and some other states, offer regular comp which would cover glass as a peril...but also 'just' glass coverage, meaning, no other comp perils apply you only have coverage for the glass...when i get some time i'll research the doi page for pa it's likely in there if they do sell this ''glass'' coverage (only) as an option.

I asked a few family members about this at a recent birthday party and apparently they were given the option to have "glass" on the policy. It really isn't something I have thought about because there are always the same option we just make sure we have every year. Kind of like going to a grocery store once a week and just knowing milk and bread are on the list..ya know?

Ah. but how many will notice if that same 64oz. Half gallon jug now only contains 62oz.s?? (same jug different volume)

Just like the people that don't read the label on a milk jug... (or most anything else)

How many people read their Policy change pages that come with the renewal notice? If not, how would they now if "Glass" had been excluded from Comp. until they had a claim?

good point fred..i always scan them to see if anything other than garbage, but that is probably directly related to my job...good idea to always look at them...how many people EVER read the policy period? i'd say a good guess would be 2% maybe...

I know when you are not used to dealing with it everyday it can easily get by you. As you said Lori, you work with it everyday so it has become second nature to you to know what to look for. For me it was a burn and learn situation, I think that it should have fallen under my comprehensive coverage. That is the problem when you get a policy over the phone or online, this is the first one that I have had, there really is no one on one customer service. The billing people are great, but when it comes to getting down to the nitty gritty of your policy, they are not going to volunteer jack. Sad but true, and most of us don't know the questions that we should be asking.

It is in, car is inspected, party over, all bills paid, party over, :?

At least it is all done. I have to see things from Freds view too. If I didn;t read the policy I would not have realized the glass exclusion was missing. My husband says I am too anal about everything..I probaly would have asked when I renewed but thats only because I have had to rely on glass a few times and would not have wanted to have to pay for something like that out of my pocket...
GN...did you ask your insurance company about getting glass added? You know how the winters are here in PA and the coal trucks...you never know when something is going to fly up and hit the windsheild.

Mine was a mini van, LOL, she did not even notice that she hit it. She just drove merrily on her way.

The coal trucks just blast me with the road crap, so far nothing else that would that the road crews have been putting on th roads, when they maintenece for winter.

One thing is if you live near coal truck or places that get bed weather and have those big trucks out on the road you best have some type of glass protection. One day I was driving behind a coal truck and something came flying out of the back and hit my windsheild. It was a CD. They were flying out left and right. Thought it was pretty weird a coal truck would be hauling a load of CDs. Never did figure it out I just know that a Cd is no match for a windsheild. It shattered and the glass in my car was fine.
