During a cold snap, the pipes in your building freeze and burst. While doing a load of laundry, your washing machine overflows. A heavy rainstorm causes water to leak through the roof of your building--and you live on the top floor. Water damage occurs frequently, so it''s a good idea to know what is (and isn''t) covered by insurance.

Flood isn't normally covered under the homeowners plan. Hence, homeowners staying in the flood plains are required to purchase separate flood insurance in order to cover the damages caused by overflowing of river, hurricanes or heavy rainfall.

Te flood policies are available through the National Flood Insurance Program and the insurers associated with this program offer flood insurance to the homeowners.

Apart from flood, the homeowners insurance cover water damages if its sudden and accidental, now that means that seepage of pipe water isn't covered under the HO policy. Also mold damages resulted from a water damage may not receive coverage under the standard homeowners insurance. Hence, you have mentioned it right that one need to understand what is and isn't covered under his policy and is required to tune the requirements.
