There are some obvious reasons behind each denial of your long term disability income benefits-

Unrevealed purpose

An adjuster may turn down your claims request if he is not provided with substantial evidence describing your disability. He would prefer to have medical reports that clearly depict the causes of your mental or physical problem. There are disability income policies that would necessarily demand such medical proofs while others may not. The insurance carrier may hold the absence of such proof as the basis of claim denials.

Job standards

The claims adjuster may go through your job profile to make sure that your job involves considerable elements of stress and exhaustion. It may so happen that your individual work involves stress elements while the organization does not fall under specific categories set by the national economy. Under such circumstances your profile may not be considered for such claims.

Pre-existing conditions

Your disability insurance claim may be denied due to any pre-existing health conditions. There could be a waiting period of up to 12 months for pre-existing conditions mentioned within your policy. Such a condition is usually described as a health condition due to which you could be treated for a certain time-frame prior to the commencement of your coverage.

Elimination period

It is mandatory for most of the disability policies that in order to have a claim settled the claimant should be disabled through the stretch of the “elimination period”. The elimination period would most likely stretch from 30 days to 6 months. That is the reason you may not be entitled to receive your policy benefits even when you could be completely disabled at the beginning but recovered within the elimination period.

Physician’s supervision

For most of the disability policies it is mandatory for you to be under the thorough supervision of a physician. It becomes tough as you would need to support your claim with credible medical proof. There could be some confusion regarding the definition of ‘physician‘ as laid by a carrier. Some of the disability policies would state a ‘physician‘ as a medical doctor, while others may not.

Now, before you would forward your disability claim, it is absolutely important for you to conduct a careful consideration of one or more of the above mentioned facts. Once you have sorted out your areas of concern, you could rest assured that your claim stands a clear chance to get settled.

Hi,

I think this topic about disability insurance is really good. As when i was about to go in for a medical claim for my disability, i too faced this kind of similar problem. But to my rescue i got a medical proof from my family doctor who really helped me in getting my claim what i deserved. But i really look out for those who do really go mad to get this. Its not about these insurance companies, i think if we have all the necessary documents with us then definitely the chances of getting the claim are higher.
