Vision insurance

Hi,
I am resorting to the forum as my last resort of help as none of my friends and relatives can answer my question. I have to go for a cataract surgery. I have only one good eye & if the surgery causes permanent vision damage I would be distraught. I want to insure the one good eye urgently. I am a retiree so disability insurance would not work. Please help.

Since you have already got cataract and your surgery is impending, your chances to purchase any insurance at this time is next to none. The only coverage that might fit your need would be some form of long-term care.

This isn't covered by vision insurance- vision coverage pays for things like exams, lenses, contacts, etc.

Yours is a medical concern and would be (usually) covered through your medical coverage. Are you currently on Medicare or do you have a private (group or individual) policy, or perhaps both?

In terms of acquiring new individual insurance coverage, even if the policy were to be issued, they wouldn't cover your vision problems as they would be considered preexisting conditions. Frankly, the likelihood of them even ISSUING a policy is really slim.

Long-Term Care insurance would have nothing to do with this as LTC isn't a medical coverage policy.

You stated that you are a retiree, so that makes me think that Medicare is in place.

InsTeacher is right this would't fall under vision insurance, it's more a health insurance claim. Some protections to the insurance companies are waiting periods, so if you're looking to get insurance and go straight to surgery you won't be covered. Unfortunately this might be considered a pre-existing condition so you may not even be approved in the first place.

Aside from the fact that there is no such coverage as this, the truth about insurance is simple:

If you wait until you really need the insurance to buy it, you've waited at least one day too long.
