your choice insurance

My insurance is changing as of the 1st of the year to a your choice plan. My weekly payments are very high for a family plan is $170/week and with this coverage I will have to pay $50 an office visit for an OB dr that falls into the tier 2 category. When I delivery, this dr delivers in a tier 3 hospital which means that my deductible is $2000 for the delivery. Total delivery costs are listed as $3300 so I am going to pay more than my insurance company or my employer is paying! I feel that this cannot be right and that there myst be something that I can do to make this whole new insurance plan cost acceptable. Seems that my weekly fee is the exact same as it was but now all my extras have gone up considerably. Does anyone know anything about this type of plan??

Hello jr422,

I think we will need some more information to answer your question.

What is your current health insurance company? What type of plan do you currently have? Is the your choice plan with the same company?

Your plan may be a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). It could also be an employer's self-funded plan. There is a possibility that it is a variation of a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) called a Point of Service (POS) plan. Any of these could do what you are describing.

But as to your statement, "I am going to pay more than my insurance company or my employer," what is wrong with this? You don't like paying $680 per month for family coverage with this benefit. Would you be happier paying $1000 per month and have less out of pocket expense?

You won't be continuously pregnant. Your statement about the insurance company and your employer paying less than you do is essentially a one-time statement relative to a one-time event. Do you even know how much your employer is paying for your health coverage? Do you realize that if you stay with the same health insurance company for the rest of your life, they will have to pay for all of your lifetime health expenses without a time or dollar limit?

What is it that you are really upset about? The cost or the coverage? Those are matters you need to discuss with your employer. No one here can help you do that.
